You may have heard something about the “Bounty of Bethlehem.” It’s been a part of our community for 36 years. However, you may not know the details, and I want to share them with you because it’s such an extraordinary example of community.
The Bounty of Bethlehem’s mission is simple: provide a warm gathering place and a lovely Christmas Dinner for anyone who needs it, regardless of circumstances, because no one should be alone on Christmas.
Nearly 200 turkeys, close to a hundred hams. More than 250 volunteers who are preparing to feed 2,500 people. They take some 600 meals out into the community, to the elderly who can’t get out, to firefighters, police officers, EMS crews and others who won’t get to enjoy a Christmas dinner with their families.
And it’s all made possible through donations and volunteers! Restaurants, businesses all across the area contribute. Neighbors give; in fact, a man who chooses to remain anonymous just donated 75 turkeys! Organizers say it’s a tradition he started years ago and continues.
From food to silverware, plates, and utensils to flower arrangements, decorations, even toys for the kids … every bit of it is donated. And you can be a part of it.
Bounty of Bethlehem is still accepting donations of turkeys and bone-in hams. You can drop them off at the school from 8 am to 5 pm thru Saturday (Dec. 22nd). Prefer baking? Desserts, cookies, cakes, brownies, etc. can be dropped off between now and Christmas Eve – 8 am to 5 pm – you can even bring them by on Christmas Day (10 to 11 am).
Love to puts smiles on kids’ faces? They’re accepting toy donations too – new, unwrapped, with batteries if necessary, please. Wrapping paper, tape – they need those items, too. You can drop off those donations between now and Christmas Eve – 8 am to 5 pm.
I don’t know who inspired this idea; if you do, please email me the history of it. I’m just so moved by the abundance of love that emanates from it. I plan to be a part of it in some way. I hope you’ll consider joining me.
Merry Christmas!
Tammy
