Should step children be allowed to talk to their step parents after a divorce?

THERAPY THURSDAY MESSAGE:
Dear Melanie & Crystal,
My second wife and I are divorcing. My 17-year-old daughter wants to remain friends with her stepmother. I am forbidding it at the moment. It would be different if it was her real mother, but it’s not. My daughter is now mad at me. As long as she lives under my roof, she’s under my rules and has to do what I say. She says I’m being cruel and should allow them to continue their relationship. I’m starting to feel a little guilty about my decision, but know I need to stick to my guns. In a situation like this, should children be allowed to continue to talk to their stepmother or father once a divorce is finalized? I don’t want my second wife poisoning my daughter’s mind and turning her against me. -Chris
