ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Police Department will participate in Operation Crash Reduction, a weeklong traffic safety initiative, with agencies across North Carolina.

Organized by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, Operation Crash Reduction will run from Oct. 6-12.

According to an APD press release, the initiative will focus on “preventing crashes caused by speeding, distracting driving and other unsafe driving behavior.

“October has historically been one of the most dangerous months for traffic fatalities in North Carolina,” APD wrote in the release. “Throughout the campaign, APD officers will conduct focused efforts during this period to enhance proactive patrols and enforcement activities aimed at reducing traffic collisions and improving roadway safety.”

“We’re urging everyone to slow down, follow posted speed limits, buckle up and avoid distractions while driving. The choices you make behind the wheel can save lives, including your own,” said APD Chief Mike Lamb.
