ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — GE Aerospace is investing $160 million to expand operations at its North Carolina plants, including the Asheville facility, creating new manufacturing jobs across the state.

The aircraft engine maker, which also has plants in Durham, West Jefferson and Wilmington, announced Monday that the investment is part of a broader $1 billion U.S. expansion aimed at increasing engine production and strengthening the defense industrial base.

GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp made the announcement during a visit to the company’s Research Triangle Park plant, where engines for narrow- and wide-body airplanes are assembled.

In Asheville, the $48 million investment will support upgrades to two key buildings that produce parts for commercial aircraft as well as military fighter jets, helicopters and ships. Improvements will include precision grinding and machining equipment, inspection technology, specialized tooling, and facility enhancements.

“From the mountains to the coast, the future of flight will be built right here in North Carolina,” Gov. Josh Stein said in a statement.

The expansion is expected to add hundreds of new jobs across the state, building on GE Aerospace’s ongoing investments in North Carolina.
