ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Emergency officials are urging residents in Asheville and surrounding areas to closely monitor forecasts and prepare for a potential winter storm this weekend.

City and county agencies say they are actively coordinating to respond to any impacts from the storm.

“As for those in need of physical assistance, our dedicated public safety staff remain ready to respond to community needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” a City of Asheville spokesperson said. “Our staff constantly monitors any developing weather system for indications of community impact. Teams from water, fire, public works and other departments remain in contact with executive leadership, taking proactive steps to prepare staff and facilities. Our Emergency Operations Center staff also monitors potential threats and can activate citywide coordinated responses as needed, including requesting additional resources from county or state agencies.”

Buncombe County officials said they are working closely with the National Weather Service to guide their response and plan meetings with fire chiefs, municipalities and law enforcement once updated forecasts are available.

North Carolina Emergency Management says the threat of winter weather is increasing statewide. Officials advise residents to take the threat seriously and complete preparations by Friday evening.

Stranded vehicles checked by first responders may be marked with yellow caution tape. Only call 911 for emergencies; for general information, contact 211 or follow local government updates.
