ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville set a daily high-temperature record Wednesday, but the heat isn’t going anywhere just yet.

The temperature reached 92 degrees at Asheville Regional Airport on Sept. 2, breaking the previous daily record of 91 degrees set in 2020, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.

Weather records for the Asheville area date to 1869.

Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue across the region through Saturday afternoon.

While Asheville is not under a heat advisory Thursday, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, with humidity adding to the discomfort. The National Weather Service said heat index values could reach the lower 100s east of the mountains.

The hot and humid conditions also bring a risk of heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heat stroke.

Forecasters are urging people to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor work when possible, particularly during the hottest part of the day.

For Asheville and the surrounding mountains, scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday and Friday, but the storms are expected to remain mostly confined to the mountains.

Saturday could bring more widespread showers and thunderstorms as a cold front moves through the region.

A cooling trend is expected to arrive Sunday, with temperatures returning closer to normal Monday and Tuesday.
