ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Fire Department is known for responding to emergencies involving flames, but sometimes its calls involve a different kind of rescue.

On Thursday, April 23, firefighters were dispatched to a storage unit facility on Wilmington Street in West Asheville after a dog became locked inside a vehicle.

According to the department, a 6-month-old puppy named Peter accidentally locked his owner out of the car after stepping on the lock button while the owner’s keys and phone were still inside. That left the dog trapped alone in the vehicle.

Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and were able to safely rescue Peter and reunite him with his owner.

The owner later praised the responding crew, calling them “sweet and amazing” and noting that they arrived quickly.

While the department regularly handles fire suppression and emergency medical calls, officials said incidents like this highlight the range of situations firefighters encounter in the community and the service they provide beyond traditional fire response.
