Buncombe County man dies in shooting near Madison County line

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Deputies with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday evening near the Madison County line.

According to officials, patrol deputies responded around 6 p.m. to a report of a gunshot wound on Kreston Drive, where they found William Jennings Bryan Clay III, 55, of Kreston Drive, dead at the scene.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Investigation Team responded and continue to investigate the shooting.

Sheriff Quentin Miller said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

“I appreciate the quick response of BCSO personnel and how they compassionately carried out their responsibilities tonight,” District 2 Captain Chris Stockton said in a statement released just after midnight. “Our hearts go out to those whose lives have been impacted by this incident.”

Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
