ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A 26-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Folk Art Center in Asheville to Mount Mitchell State Park has reopened, restoring access to the popular Craggy Gardens area at milepost 364.

At 5,500 feet, Craggy Gardens is known for its sweeping views and hiking trails. But its facilities, developed more than 70 years ago, have been strained by heavy use and harsh mountain weather.

The site is slated for major improvements funded by a $750,000 grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority’s Legacy Investment from Tourism Fund. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is raising an additional $750,000 in matching funds for permanent, accessible restrooms, updated trail signage and design work for renovations at the visitor center and picnic area.

Construction on new vault toilets is expected to begin in 2026, according to the National Park Service.

“We are committed to ensuring Craggy Gardens and the greater national park provide safe and enjoyable experiences for visitors and locals,” Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation CEO Carolyn Ward said in a news release. “Now, individuals have the opportunity to support an effort to make every visit to this incredible place even more welcoming and meaningful.”

The parkway, which does not charge admission, faces challenges with staffing and maintenance backlogs, making outside investment vital, Ward said.

Vic Isley, president and CEO of Explore Asheville and the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, praised the reopening ahead of the fall foliage season.

“The parkway is a driver of beautiful experiences that help drive a healthy travel and hospitality economy,” she said in the news release.
