ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A crash and emergency road work caused significant traffic delays across parts of Buncombe County on Friday morning, according to state transportation officials.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported slowdowns along New Leicester Highway at Mount Carmel Road, near Old County Home Road by a gas station and near Eliada Home Road.

Social media posts indicated congestion at Mount Carmel Road was caused by a crash at that intersection. No information about injuries was immediately available.

Separately, the department reported both southbound lanes of U.S. 19, also known as Smokey Park Highway, were closed near Ingles because of emergency repairs.

Transportation officials said the closure was related to a water main break and that motorists should follow directions from on-scene personnel. The expected impact to traffic was described as high.

The lanes were expected to reopen about 1 p.m.
