Earthquakes recorded near Canton, Weaverville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two small earthquakes were recorded in western North Carolina over a 25-hour period, with the U.S. Geological Survey receiving reports of weak shaking from both.

The first earthquake struck around 7:24 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, about 4 miles south-southwest of Canton. The second was recorded at 7:57 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, about 5 miles east-northeast of Weaverville.

Both earthquakes registered a magnitude of 2.0, according to the USGS.

The Canton earthquake was centered about 3.9 miles beneath the surface, while the Weaverville earthquake originated about 2.2 miles deep.

USGS data classified the shaking reported from the Canton earthquake as weak. The Weaverville earthquake also produced weak shaking, according to the agency’s Did You Feel It? data.

The Canton earthquake was recorded at 35.471 degrees north latitude and 82.869 degrees west longitude. The Weaverville earthquake was recorded at 35.718 degrees north latitude and 82.476 degrees west longitude.
