ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As the summer winds down, many students may need a little extra motivation to get excited about heading back to school. Long days without obligations and mornings free from alarm clocks can make the return to early wake-ups and classrooms a tough adjustment.

Educators say a new school year brings opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Students have a chance to build on their academic progress, athletes may try out for teams, and extracurricular activities can help children grow socially and personally. But some families may need strategies to ease the transition.

Experts and parents recommend several ways to build excitement for the first day back:

Make the first day special. Parents can ease nerves by adding something out of the ordinary, like preparing a homecooked breakfast or letting children buy lunch in the cafeteria instead of packing it. A small change can help turn jitters into anticipation.

Emphasize new subjects. Highlighting upcoming opportunities can spark interest. Whether it’s playing in the school band, joining a new club, or finally starting a foreign language class, focusing on what’s fresh can motivate students to return.

Create a school calendar. Reviewing the year’s schedule together and marking down field trips, performances or special events gives kids something to look forward to beyond academics.

Host a late-summer gathering. A final pool party or playdate reminds students they’ll soon see their friends daily, which can make the first day feel less daunting.

While the end of summer vacation is rarely met with cheers, parents can take steps to build enthusiasm. By turning the focus toward new opportunities and shared experiences, families can make the start of the school year a positive one.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary."
