ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Drivers traveling on Interstate 26 West through south Asheville should plan for overnight closures this week as crews work to improve the roadway.

A contractor for the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close sections of I-26 West from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, weather permitting, between Long Shoals Road (Exit 37) and Brevard Road (Exit 33).

During the closures, traffic will be detoured west onto Long Shoals Road (N.C. 146) before heading north on Brevard Road (N.C. 191) back to I-26.

The overnight work will allow crews to diamond-grind the pavement, creating a smoother driving surface, and install new pavement markings beneath the recently completed Blue Ridge Parkway bridge. The work is part of the ongoing I-26 Widening project.

Transportation officials urged motorists to slow down, watch for crews and equipment, obey posted traffic signs and follow the marked detour for the safety of workers and drivers.
