ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville police officers arrested a man Monday evening after authorities say he struck multiple vehicles and light poles while driving recklessly in downtown Asheville.

Police responded to several reports around 7:30 p.m. March 2 of a pickup truck endangering pedestrians, hitting vehicles and damaging street lights in the downtown area.

Officers located the vehicle, described as a GMC Sierra, on Walnut Street after it hit a parked car and appeared to become disabled. According to police, the driver ignored commands from officers and instead revved the engine as if trying to free the truck and leave the scene.

Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and took him into custody without further incident.

Police identified the driver as Nicholas Dean Jones, 43.

Jones is charged with driving while impaired, two counts of driving while license revoked for impaired driving, reckless driving with wanton disregard, reckless driving to endanger, resisting a public officer, expired registration and expired or no inspection.

He was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility and released after posting bond.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Asheville Police Department at 828-252-1110. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the TIP2APD smartphone application or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.
