Man charged with attempted murder after I-40 road-rage shooting

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Buncombe County man wanted for questioning in a road-rage shooting on Interstate 40 has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and several other offenses, authorities said.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Alexander Sherman McKenzie was taken into custody shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday on Tunnel Road.

Investigators said McKenzie was sought in connection with a June 10 shooting that occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on I-40 near Exit 59 at Patton Cove Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, a driver reported that another motorist fired multiple shots into his vehicle while both were traveling on the interstate. No injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, detectives identified McKenzie as a suspect and obtained warrants for his arrest.

McKenzie is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond.

He faces the following charges:

  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official
  • Resisting a public officer
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Discharge of a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear
  • Discharging a weapon into occupied property
  • Injury to personal property
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Expired registration card/tag

“We are thankful our patrol deputies were able to take Mr. McKenzie into custody without anyone being hurt,” District 1 Capt. Dustan Auldredge said in a statement. “And we appreciate the work of our Criminal Investigations Division that led to his identification and arrest.”

Authorities have not released additional details about the shooting investigation.
