ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A power outage hit downtown Asheville around 4:08 p.m. this afternoon. Duke Energy reports that power will be restored within the next two hours, but some could be without power overnight.

According to Asheville Police Department Public Information Officer Rick Rice, the outage was caused by a power box on Rankin Avenue.

Meanwhile, a representative from Duke Energy said that crews are working to repair “some damage to some underground equipment in the area,” but that they “still don’t know the cause.”

APD is directing traffic in the area.

The Duke Energy representative reported that the “majority of the impacted customers are expected to be restored within the next hour or two,” though “there’s a chance that some customers could be without power overnight as crews work to finalize those repairs.”

On the Duke Energy outage map, the power company estimated that power would be restored by 9 p.m., June 25.

The Duke Energy outage maps shows that the June 25 outage impacted at least 100 customers in downtown Asheville. The outage map started with over 370 outages reported, jumped to over 900 and settled to 105 by 5:45 p.m. on June 25.
