ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The latest chapter in a $7 million overhaul of West Asheville will begin this Sunday, Aug. 9, on Haywood Road. The project will stretch along the street for the next three months.

The resurfacing initiative will span Haywood Road from Patton Avenue to the west and Ridgelawn Road to the east. Contracting crews from Watson Contracting of Franklin, N.C., will work on the route 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, with projected conclusion in November 2026.

Lane closures will be necessary for certain portions of the project during overnight operations. Crews will block out on-street parking spots in advance in order to prevent vehicles from being towed overnight.

The project will mill out old asphalt, install traffic signs components and resurface the entire stretch. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, specific improvements include:

  • Resurfacing and bicycle and pedestrian improvements to Haywood Road for approximately two miles from Patton Avenue to Ridgelawn Road
  • Bicycle lanes in both directions from Patton Avenue to Sulphur Springs, and in both directions from Richmond Avenue to Ridgelawn Road
  • Enhanced pedestrian crossings at various locations throughout the corridor, including signalization and flashing pedestrian crossing signs
  • ADA compliant curb ramps

The NCDOT emphasized the need for safety awareness during the project.

“This is routine milling and paving, but in a dense, urban environment,” NCDOT Resident Engineer Tom Veazey said. “It’s important that everybody β€” drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, crew employees β€” remain alert, be aware of their surroundings and remain vigilant about safety.”
