ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Talk of Buc-ee’s bringing one of its massive travel centers to the Asheville area has quickly spread on social media this week, but local officials said they haven’t received any proposals from the Texas-based chain.

Buncombe County officials said no plans have been submitted, and Asheville’s planning department confirmed the city has not received an application either.

Efforts to reach Buc-ee’s officials have been unsuccessful.

The speculation began after posts circulated in Asheville food and community groups claiming Buc-ee’s — known for its sprawling convenience stores, brisket sandwiches and spotless restrooms — was eyeing Western North Carolina.

Online discussions suggested possible sites ranging from Fletcher and Weaverville to West Asheville and Swannanoa. Some even speculated the company had looked at land near Exit 37 off Interstate 40, where a planned subdivision never materialized.

Reaction was mixed. Some commenters welcomed the idea, saying Asheville “deserves a Buc-ee’s,” while others worried about worsening traffic congestion.
