ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Riceville Volunteer Fire Department has received a $100,000 disaster relief grant from the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, the agency announced.

The funding, drawn from House Bills 47 and 1012, will support equipment purchases, wildland protective gear and other items aimed at improving wildfire response and preparedness, officials said.

“We appreciate the effort your team put into the application and recognize the important recovery work you are doing in your community,” State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor wrote in a letter to the department.

The grant is part of a $10 million fund the State Fire Marshal’s office is distributing to small and volunteer fire departments in counties affected by Tropical Storm Helene. Funds may be used to cover hurricane-related expenses, purchase equipment or make capital improvements to strengthen readiness for emergencies. Individual grants are capped at $500,000, with up to $250,000 allocated for administrative costs.

House Bill 1012 (SL2025-26) provided an additional allocation allowing grants of up to $50,000 for fire departments and rescue squads in 25 designated counties. These funds can be used to repair or replace equipment or facilities damaged by Helene or to enhance wildfire preparedness.

Riceville Fire Chief Tom Kelly thanked the community and state officials for the support. “After all the ups and downs we have been through because of Hurricane Helene, a ray of sunshine has appeared,” Kelly said in a Facebook post. “While the grant was requested for other items as well, we are very grateful… Stay strong good people and thank you for your continued support. #ricevillestrong”
