ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — For this edition of our weekly weekend guide, we decided to suggest our favorite snow day activities. After making your preparations for the forthcoming winter storm, consider these cold weather pastimes. Stay warm and keep safe out there.

Go sledding

As a mountain town, Asheville has no shortage of great sledding spots. A few of our favorites include the hill next to Tempie Avery Montford Community Center, the slopes of Jones Park Playground and the front lawn of North Buncombe Middle School.

Look for animal tracks

For animal lovers, a fun activity in fresh snow is to walk around looking for animal tracks. When you find a trail, snap a photo, and then head home for some zoological research.

Build a snowman – or a snow monster

In the grand tradition of “Keep Asheville Weird,” consider the possibilities of snow construction beyond the simulacrum of man. Building a silly snow monster, complete with multiple gravel eyeballs, carrot horns and a warm scarf – monsters get cold too – is a great way to showcase your chilly creativity.

Cuddle up for a movie night

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, spotlighting movies like “Sinners,” “One Battle After Another” and “KPop Demon Hunters.” Catch up on the best movies of the year while cuddling up against the cold. For more suggestions, try our list of the 25 best movies of 2025.

Start a snowball fight

While the mailman and local dogs and cats should be left alone, sparking a snowball fight is a great way to build neighborhood rapport and get some exercise in the snowy outdoors. Be sure to wear gloves, lest your fingers freeze.

Make snow cream

A delicious seasonal treat might soon be available right outside your front door. Snow cream requires only four ingredients:

  • Evaporated milk, half-and-half or cream: Adds a creamy, dairy element to the ice cream
  • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the mixture
  • Vanilla extract: Adds a classic vanilla flavor to the mix
  • Snow: The star of the show, which mixes into the other ingredients for an instantaneous frozen dessert

Simply mix the household ingredients in one bowl, collect some snow in another and combine for a tasty delight.
