Which Asheville area government offices are closing for Labor Day 2026?

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — This Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, county and city government offices across Western North Carolina will be closing in observation of the holiday. Read the list below.

Asheville

Asheville City Hall offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.

Asheville Rides Transit, or ART, bus services will operate on a holiday schedule: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For route information, visit www.ridetheart.com.

The Sanitation office will be closed and there will be no trash, recycling, scrap metal, appliance or brush collection on Labor Day. Collection services will run Tuesday to Friday instead.

Asheville Parks & Recreation offices and community center buildings are closed Monday, though playgrounds, picnic areas and sports courts will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville and its box office will be closed on Monday.

Buncombe County

Buncombe County government offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.

The Buncombe County Animal Shelter will be closed for Labor Day.

The Buncombe County Board of Elections, City/County Bureau of Identification, Government Services Center, Health & Human Services, Property Assessment/Tax Collections, Buncombe County Register of Deeds and Buncombe County Courthouse will be closed.

Emergency Services offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, though EMS and 911 will maintain normal operations. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office front desk will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, all other operations will be on a normal schedule.

The Family Justice Center will be closed, but 24-hour hotline information can be found at www.buncombenc.gov/fjc.

FCC Environmental Services trash and recycling collections will be closed on Monday, with collections taking a one-day collection delay. The Buncombe County Landfill and Transfer Station will be closed Monday, Sept. 7.

Mountain Mobility will continue to operate City of Asheville Complementary Paratransit Services on Monday, but no other trips will be served.

Parks & Recreation administration offices will be closed on Monday, but Buncombe County parks will operate on regular hours. Erwin Pool will be open for Labor Day from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Buncombe County Public Libraries will be closed.

Henderson County

All Henderson County local government offices and agencies, including Animal Services, all Henderson County Public Library branches, Solid Waste, including the Transfer Station and Convenience Center, and the Henderson County Courthouse will close for Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The Henderson County Board of Commissioners meeting, regularly scheduled for the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m., will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, instead.

McDowell County

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office administrative offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, to observe the Labor Day holiday. For Sheriff’s Office response, call McDowell County Communications at (828) 652-4000. For emergencies, dial 911.
